Acerola (Malpighia glabra L.) is a shrubby, climbing plant native to tropical and subtropical areas of America, which can even reach 5 meters in height. The fruits, drupes with a diameter of one to two centimeters, closely resemble cherries and for this reason the acerola is also known as Barbados or Brazil cherry. Inside, the fruit is divided into segments with a slightly sour taste, which recall the typical taste of the orange.
The main reason for the fame of Acerola is the very high percentage of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) contained in its fruits, which makes it known as one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. The fruit has a very high content of this vitamin, about fifteen times higher than that of kiwi and 20 times that of orange juice. What is Acerola Acerola is a food supplement that provides 700 mg of vitamin C per daily dose. The acerola extract performs an antioxidant function, thanks also to the presence of vitamin C*, which contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
